A:
The Basics

This topic provides a range of art and design activities and skills. Pupils experience how to research and make sketchbook studies, using their findings to experiment as well as refine their pieces.

Pupils will experience how to use primary images, sources and places to inform their choices and pieces.

2nd
B: Shoes

Pupils engage in a project that involves observational drawing and experimentation around the theme of shoes.

Pupils will investigate famous designers and take inspiration from the natural world and different cultures. Pupils produce their own 3D design of a shoe in a range of materials including clay, mod roc, wire and mixed media.

Spring

1st
A: Colour/Tree Studies

This topic provides a range of art and design activities and skills. Pupils experience how to research and make sketchbook studies, using their findings to experiment as well as refine their pieces.

Pupils will experience how to use primary images, sources and places to inform their choices and pieces.

2nd
B: Insects

As part of this study pupils will produce a variety of drawings exploring the qualities of insects using a variety of appropriate materials.

There is also an Artist study and analysis. Exploration of the artist’s styles and techniques. Following discussion of the techniques used, and techniques available to them, pupils will design ideas for their own 3D insects using found objects and materials available in the department. Pupils may choose to develop one of their insect drawings into a large mixed media study.

Summer

1st
A: Landscapes

In this topic, pupils explore landscape as the starting point for two- and three-dimensional work. They collect visual and other information by visiting a landscape and by studying the methods, approaches and intentions of artists and craftspeople who use the environment as inspiration.

B: What’s in a building?

In this unit, pupils explore their ideas and feelings about buildings and their experiences of walking through spaces. They record interesting features, such as doorways, arches, windows, porches and courtyards. They evolve designs for sculpture based on their studies and produce a sculpture of a building in clay or paper. They look at the work of architects, designers and sculptors.
