Design Technology Curriculum Intent

At Alt Bridge, Design and Technology is based on the concept of ‘Technology for all’ and aims to challenge pupils to design and make creative products in the areas of: Resistant Materials, Graphics, and Product Design.

Pupils will learn to think creatively and solve problems, as individuals and as members of a team. They will work as a designer who looks for opportunities to design and make useful products. Learn how to design things and begin to understand why products are designed and styled as they are. They learn how to make products in a wide range of materials including: woods, plastics, metals, paper, and card.

Implementation

At Alt Bridge School we intend to build a Design Technology curriculum which develops learning and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills. Students will know more, remember more and understand more. We design our schemes of work to promote personalisation of learning and ensure appropriate support and challenge are given to each student. We promote independence through individual work and peer projects with staff support. We use a range of technology including iPads and Apps to also support the development of pupils subject knowledge and practical skills. It is part of our professional mission to support all of our students on their journey towards becoming confident, happy and successful young people with well-planned and meaningful future destinations.
Design and Technology is a subject that aims to prepare pupils for today’s world of rapidly changing technology. A range of skills will be taught ensuring that students are aware of health and safety issues related to the tasks undertaken. Clear and appropriate cross-curricular links to underpin learning in multi areas across the curriculum giving the students opportunities to learn life skills and apply skills to ‘hands on’ situations in a purposeful context.

Impact

Students will have clear enjoyment and confidence in design and technology that they will then apply to other areas of the curriculum. Students will ultimately know more, remember more and understand more about Design Technology, demonstrating this knowledge when using tools or skills in other areas of the curriculum and in opportunities out of school. As designers, students will develop skills and attributes they can use beyond school and into adulthood.
