Me in the Kitchen 1:

Pupils discover through FPTs and DAMs how to use different equipment in the kitchen safely and Hygienically.

Unit 1: Me in The Kitchen 1 – All year 7 groups became introduced to the food technology room. They explored the importance of all the health and safety preparations that need to be conducted before handling food. They began to use basic equipment and explored the different parts of a recipe and demonstrated how to follow a recipe to produce a finished dish. All year 7 pupils can now distinguish between gas and electric hobs and can safely turn on and use a hob correctly.

Ginger Bread Decorations:

Through a Design and Make activity pupils learn key concepts and skills for hand sewing.

Unit 2: Gingerbread Christmas Decoration
– Year 7 pupils were introduced to the textiles element of Design Technology. They became familiar with using the equipment and terminology and became aware of health and safety issues concerning the textiles room. Pupils worked through the design process to create a gingerbread Christmas tree decoration, learning new skills – such as marking out and cutting fabric with the correct equipment, threading a needle and using ‘blanket’ stitch – in order to realise their ideas.

Unit 3: Me in the Kitchen 2 – Year 7 Pupils were able to learn new skills with different equipment, they were introduced to the oven and how it is to be used safely and all pupils were successful in turning the oven on and using oven gloves to safely maneuver their dishes into and out of the oven. Pupils produced a batch of scones and Lentil and vegetable soup.

Team cook Design and Make:

Pupils will have the opportunity to
develop their skills during FPT then using these skills work in pairs to tackle a number of ‘design and make’ challenges as a team.

Unit 4: Team Cooking: Cookie and Cupcake Company – During this unit pupils work together in a pair to produce their own brand and logo. They will research different ingredients and images of cupcakes and cookies to inspire their own creativity in designing their own. They will learn the practical skills needed to create and develop their own recipe whilst working through the design process.


Learning to use the Sewing Machine:

Through a number of Focused Practical Tasks pupils learn the basic skills needed to use a sewing machine in order to make a textiles product.

Unit 5: Learning to use the Sewing Machine – Pupils will develop the skills needed to use a sewing machine. They will look at the importance of health and safety whilst working in the textiles room. Pupils will work through task in order to gain their ‘sewing machine driving license’. They will be awarded this once they have successfully completed: stitching in a straight line, stitching in a curved line, stitching a straight seam, stitching a curved seam and using different types of stitches.

Design and Make a Cushion:

Unit 6: 

Pupils will work through the design process in order to answer a design brief. Through, research, design, planning, making and evaluation pupils will use their skills gained from unit 5 and their own creativity to produce a cushion.
